This website shares interrelated projects created over a period of seven years to increase community awareness and action to care for salmon and their waterways within Coast Salish territories in the place colonially known as the Greater Vancouver area.
This work is guided by Elder Rick Bailey from q̓íc̓əy̓ (Katzie) First Nation. Inspired by Rick’s vision that we all care for salmon like family, we have worked collaboratively with different community groups including environmental organizations, schools, and municipalities to plant trees to create more shade offsetting global warming, to create a mural to teach people the history and current environmental challenges of the Katzie Slough, and to bring together diverse Elders, researchers and land guardians to create a “many-eyed” (Kelly, 2013) story of our responsibility to the Fraser River.
We hope you will join us in learning about the impact of colonialization on the water ways and the River Family of Life in your area, and care for salmon like family.
